Solid surface countertops (also known as hard surface countertops) are a great-looking, affordable, and easy-to-maintain option for kitchens. They’re made from a mixture of naturally occurring elements, such as mineral dust, mixed with acrylic resins and pigments.  This makes them popular because they approximate the look of stone but require less maintenance.

Solid-surface and quartz countertops are very similar since they are both composites made of natural materials and resin. Both countertops also make tight seals and are non-porous. However, solid-surface countertops are typically less expensive than quartz, and they are easier to install since they don’t require the specialized tools that quartz countertops do. On the other hand, quartz is more resistant to scratching and heat than solid-surface, which means it can last longer.

Most spills or stains can be cleaned with soap and water applied to a washcloth or sponge. Tougher stains can be cleaned with bleach or a general household cleanser. Since solid surfaces are nonporous, they are more stain-resistant and easier to clean than other types of countertops. Avoid using acidic cleaning products that contain chemicals like acetone or methyl chloride.

The installation process will differ depending on your kitchen, the type of solid surface countertop you choose, and its design. Once the countertops are delivered, the edges may need to be trimmed and sanded before setting the countertop into place with an adhesive.

Because of the way solid surface countertops are designed and installed, they provide a smooth, seamless look for your kitchen. While there can be a seam, they tend to be hard to see, though not invisible.
